Creating a Group of Contacts - Simple mode

Access Path > Contacts > Groups

The creation of groups allows you to group contacts according to specific criteria. These groups can then be used to send targeted messages or simply to consult contacts with common criteria. A criterion includes variables, which, when met, automatically include the corresponding contact in the group. Thus, groups are dynamic and as soon as a contact meets the criterion, it is added to the group.

Difference between simple edition mode and advanced

There are two ways to create groups, a simplified one and an advanced one. When creating a new group, the simplified editing mode is presented by default. As soon as the simplified editing page is displayed, it is possible to switch to the advanced editing mode if the criteria offered in simplified mode do not suit you or simply because you prefer the advanced mode.

Note: as soon as a criterion is saved in advanced mode, it is no longer possible to use the simplified editing mode for the group in question.

To create groups in advanced mode, see this article.

Create your group

1.    Click Create Group.

2.    In the Group creation window, specify the name of the group. If your project is available in other languages, you will need to specify a name for these other languages as well.

Info: If you want to use the group for testing, check the Test group check box. By checking this option, the group will be displayed in the list of groups available for sending a test message. If you do not check this option when creating the group, you can activate it later in the group settings via the Set as test group option

3. Once the group has been named, you need to specify the criteria for selecting the contacts to be included in the group. Here's how to do it in the video:

Specify the criteria of a group

1.    In the box on the left, select and drag the first criterion of your group.

2.    In the criteria window, specify the data you are looking for.

Info: For details of the available criteria, see this article.

3. Once you have defined the criterion, click on Save.

4. Repeat the same operation for each criterion to be added to your group.

Use cumulative criteria

It is possible to add criteria that will be cumulative (united by AND), i.e. the contact will have to meet all the criteria to be included in the group.

You can also target contacts that meet a criterion OR only if they are of the SAME TYPE. In this case, you must add an alternative criterion to an existing one. The add icon is displayed when you hover over the field of the criterion in question.

Eligible Contacts

As you add criteria, the corresponding number of contacts will appear at the top right of the page.

  • To see a list of all the contacts targeted by the group, click on the icon  .
  • To see the list of contacts associated with a category, click on the category name in the tooltip.
  • When you click Eligible, if your project contains a consent center, you can either choose All Eligible to see All eligible contacts or By opt-ins to see eligible contacts by explicit subscriptions.

Important distinction between AND and OR

It is important to understand that a contact must meet ALL of the criteria of AND, and any of the criteria of OR.

  • The addition of a criterion (AND) creates a new criterion that must be met in order for the contact to be part of the group. Each addition of a criterion is evaluated on the result of the previous criterion, and therefore each time the number of results is restricted.
    • Example: Gender = M AND City = Quebec will display male contacts who live in Quebec City.
  • Adding a sub-criterion (OR) allows you to add an alternative clause to a criterion already created. Each addition of a sub-criterion increases the number of results.
    • Example: City = Lévis OR City = Quebec will only display contacts from Quebec City or Lévis.
  • You can only add sub-criteria to criteria related to the same module.
    • Possible group: City = Lévis OR City = Quebec AND has participated in a contest AND has answered a survey.
    • Impossible group: City = Lévis OR City = Quebec OR Has entered a contest OR completed a survey
