A Web Push notification is a message sent directly to subscribers in their browser, even if the subscriber is not on the website that sends the notification. This allows communication with subscribers to inform or engage them. This facilitates engagement, information sharing of important or promotional information, and improves the user experience. For example, you could send purchase confirmations, announce a new product, or send a stock-out alert.
To become a subscriber to your Web Push, a person must visit your website and accept the subscription request you display. If this person is a DI contact who came through a link you included in an email sent with DI, they are a known visitor. You can customize the notification message for this contact with the data you have. If the person arrived at your website through another route, they will be considered anonymous. Personalization will then not be possible.
Use Cases
Promotions and Limited-Time Offers
A business can use Web Push notifications to announce a promotion, a limited-time discount, or the launch of a new product directly in subscribers’ browsers. This type of communication makes it possible to quickly reach visitors and drive traffic to the website.
Product Availability and Updates
Web Push notifications can be used to inform users when a product is back in stock or when a tracked item becomes unavailable. They can also be used to share important updates related to an order or service.
Visitor Re-engagement
An organization can send Web Push notifications to re-engage visitors who have not returned to the website recently. For example, a notification may highlight new content, remind users about an ongoing promotion, or invite them to continue an action previously started.
Important Information and Alerts
Web Push notifications can also be used to quickly communicate important information, such as a service interruption, a platform update, a schedule change, or an urgent alert. They make it possible to instantly deliver messages to subscribers.
Reminders and Events
As part of an event, webinar, or online activity, a Web Push notification can be sent to remind users about their registration, announce the start of an activity, or share an important update before the event.
Subscription Request for Notifications
Please note that subscribing to notifications is only done for the browser used to subscribe. If a user wants to subscribe to multiple browsers, they must subscribe f each browser. However, the platform does not support double subscriptions. So, if one of your contacts is subscribed to your notifications on two browsers, they will receive them twice if they use both browsers before your notification expires.
Be careful if you have multiple elements appearing on the same page, such as a pop-up or a cookie warning. Ideally, you should have only one element appearing so your visitor isn't overwhelmed and knows exactly what action to take.
The subscriber can block notifications at any time from their browser settings. An icon is displayed in the received notification to change the permission (Allow or Block).
Can I limit notifications to specific sections of my website?
Yes. You must install the provided script on the pages in which you wish to offer the subscription. Only visitors with access to these pages will be able to subscribe, such as connected visitors.
Why does the number of subscribers decrease after sending?
When you send a notification, some recipients may have changed their subscription in the meantime. The system then receives an error message for these recipients and the number of subscribers is adjusted.
Notification Elements
A notification is composed of the following elements:
- Title
- Content
- Redirection link when the notification is clicked
- Icon for your enterprise (logo or image)
- Additional image (only with Chrome)
- Domain name for your website
Consider the following for efficient Web Push:
- Target the right subscribers by refining the targeting
- Create relevant content for your recipients
- Choose the right moment for the sending
Notification Display
How long does it take to display a notification?
On some platforms, the notification will disappear after a short period of time, while others will show it until the subscriber interacts with it.
If the visitor is not on my website, will they see my notification?
It depends on the device used.
- PC: The browser must be open (the browser window does not need to be active). The notification appears in the corner of the computer's desktop. The website linked to the notification does not have to opened in a tab.
- Android: Supported by some browsers including Chrome / Firefox / Edge. Notifications appear as system notifications, even if the tab is not open.
- iOS: Notifications are possible if the user has installed the site as an app (PWA) on the home screen (iOS 16.4+).
Do web pushes work on a browser in private mode?
No, the private mode does not allow web push notifications.
Required Configuration to Use the Web Push Channel
Using the Web Push channel requires a few initial configuration steps in both Dialog Insight and your website environment. First, a Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) authorization must be configured to enable the sending of Web Push notifications. Next, the website must be configured in Dialog Insight and the required scripts must be integrated into the website to activate notifications and allow visitors to subscribe to them.
